We live in the physical world; we have bodies and we have brains: we are living souls. We have personalities and we have memories. We have desires and we have goals. So, the question is do these personal possessions stay with us after death?
There have been many people who claim to have died, experienced the “other side,” and come back to tell about it. However, these accounts, as fascinating as they are, really cannot be trusted; there are many things that could affect their testimonies such as drugs and/or hallucinations due to lack of blood flow. Fortunately, we have an account in the Bible that can answer many of our questions, and since this account was told by Jesus himself, we know it is true. This account is about Lazarus and the rich man. This is not a parable, it is an actual account; we know this because specific names were used: Lazarus and Abraham, not just some generic Abraham, but “the” Abraham from the book of Genesis. Here is the Biblical account:
Luke 16:19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.
Luke 16:20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
Luke 16:21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.
Luke 16:22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried,
Luke 16:23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.
Luke 16:24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
Luke 16:25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.
Luke 16:26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’
Luke 16:27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house—
Luke 16:28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’
Luke 16:29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’
Luke 16:30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’
Luke 16:31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'” (ESV – words of Jesus in red)
From this account, we can answer the following questions: Where did they go? Did they keep their memory? Did they retain their physical bodies and senses? Did they keep their personalities? Let’s take these one at a time:
Where did they go?
Lazarus went to be with Abraham and was comforted (Luke 16:25); the rich man went to Hades where he was in torment (Luke 16:23). There was a deep chasm between the two places, and neither side could cross over to the other side, but they could see one another and verbally communicate from one side to the other.
Did they have memory after death?
Yes, they did have memory after their brains stopped working. Even though their neurons and dendrites rotted, their memory lived on. The rich man saw Lazarus and recognized him. Surprisingly, the rich man not only recognized Lazarus but also recognized Abraham; this would imply that the rich man had an enhanced memory/knowledge and awareness of things he had never seen. Continuing on, we also see that the rich man remembered that he had five brothers, another indication of his earthly memory. Abraham too had an enhanced awareness and memory; he spoke of Moses and the prophets, all of whom lived many years after Abraham died.
Did they have bodies and senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste after death?
Both Lazarus and the rich man had bodies. We know that Lazarus had a body because he was seen by the rich man and recognized. The rich man was experiencing excessive heat and thirst; he wanted Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and touch his tongue (the rich man’s) so he could feel some cooling relief. This would indicate that he had a body and similar senses to those he had while alive on earth.
Lazarus was being comforted which would show that he was in a good spiritual as well as physical state. Also, we know that they all had eyes to see, ears to hear, tongues to taste, and fingers to touch. So, all of this would lead us to believe that our characters in this account had DNA and it was performing in a similar fashion to how it performed before death.
Did they keep their personality after death?
It appears that the rich man did keep his personality. The rich man was accustomed to getting his way by ordering people around. In this account, the rich man implored Abraham to order Lazarus to dip his finger in water to cool his (the rich man’s) tongue, and also ordered Abraham to send Lazarus back to earth to witness to his five brothers. The rich man knew that Abraham was high in the spiritual realm, but assumed that Lazarus was still a lowly outcast. Therefore, the rich man presumed that his power and authority conveyed to life after death. He presumed that both he and Abraham were men of importance, and therefore Lazarus, the low man, should do tasks when ordered. Abraham, however, did not hearken to the demands of the rich man and reproved him.
Note: This account mentions Lazarus by name, but not the rich man; he is simply referred to as the “rich man.” This shows us that Jesus knew Lazarus, but not the rich man. This is consistent with many scriptures including Luke 13:27 and Matthew 7:23:
Luke 13:27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Final thoughts
It is important to understand that this account of life after death was before the resurrection of Jesus. The New Testament teaches that when Christians die, they instantly go to be with Jesus. However, the account of Lazarus and the rich man presents some interesting clues concerning memories, senses, DNA, and personalities. It also implies that, like Abraham, we will inherit enhanced awareness, knowledge, and memory.
One clue is missing from this account, and that is the words of Lazarus. Wouldn’t it be interesting to hear Lazarus’ thoughts? Would he have said to the rich man: “Now you are getting yours,” or “I forgive you,” or “I do not know you?” Perhaps Lazarus was being spared the unpleasantness of dealing with the rich man, but for now, his thoughts remain a mystery.
Dear children and friends, The Bible is truth and the account of Lazarus, the rich man and Abraham may be used to better understand “the other side.”

Why does it say that the dead know nothing, they are sleeping in Jesus very confusing.
There are many opinions on this, but my opinion is that the Hebrew word generally used for sleep in the Bible also means rest. To me, it makes sense that they entered their rest where they are free from sin an the cares of this world. I am looking forward to that rest.

Well, I believe that death is the gate way to the life beyond the grave.’however’ we must accept the fact, that Jesus said He himself was the only way back to God the Father. No man cometh unto the Father but by me. And no one can come unto me except the Father who sent me, draws that person unto me. St John.6:44 +vrs.65. He also said if any one desire to follow Him,that person must firstly take his cross,which is a symbol of death,and follow. Therefore to enter into life eternal on this side of the cross. I think the writer did not go deeper to make clear and tell us what body type Lazarus and the rich man were. Whether spiritual body or a physical body. I believe both bodies for believrs and unbelievers goes in the grave for burial. Since both are dead, but still somethin was living in absence of the body and this too does feel, talk, and have sight. Just like the way it does when it is in the flesh. So when it depart from the flesh it does what the writer say. In short, the writer meant the soul of those 3. Lazarus, rich man and Abraham who deed conversation with the Rich man who was in torment.
Coming to what u say here, the scripture in Ecclesiastes meant the physical body which can not have any memory again and do anythin bcos it is in absence of what makes it perform all that.

According to scripture, your father,has not been judged as yet, for we all shall appear before the judgement seat of Christ. I can guarantee you, that you will see your son again but the system we live is self service. We can not brake the rules! Some they have favor but no one came from the death to tell us what is happening. From science view memory is stored to the electrons of the brain cells. Energy uses body as a cover. The resurrection of 1 Thessalonians 4:16 is only for those who are saved by the lamb, and they are taken up to go to the wedding feast and join with Jesus forever. None of these go to hell.

This issue of immediate life after death is completely contradictory to the Biblical teaching of bodily resurrection of the dead. If the dead receive their reward soon after death, why need Jesus to come again? You have an immediate judgement upon death and you either go to heaven or hell. Then at the final end of the world Judgement, everyone who ever lived will stand before God and he will tell everyone ‘s sins and then again let them know is going to Heaven and who is going to hell. the Bible until the 16th century king James translation. The word has none of the connotations of fire and torment. This was merely added by preachers. Hell.simply means”a place of hiding”. My Dad died on April 2, 2019, four days before my birthday. He has dreamed my sister asking for a lift home, and she told him he is dead. She has not seen him again since. I have read the article and have questions when we die, do we go to a waiting area to be judged or are we judged immediately and where we are going follows through?
Pray for me and my family that we will heal as the pain is still fresh and we still crying when the void present itself as he is no longer here with us. We are trying to work on forgiveness too as he was hit and killed by a motor vehicle.

The resurrection when Jesus comes refers to our physical bodies. The judgement according to our deeds, he will conduct on us as Christians at his coming, could be looked upon as a rank. After all there will be a new earth and a new heaven according to the scriptures. Some of us will live on earth, a perfect earth, and some in heaven, according to our deeds as Christians. Since the dead knows nothing, but will remain unaware until the return of Christ, wherein it the trumpet sound and the voice of Christ what will raise them, the parable Christ give about Lazarus is hypothetical. As such, we can not conclude that when we die, we will suddenly reach our respective destinations.
The only people who will gain consciousness are those who died in Christ in Revelation chapter 20: 4,5&6. They will reign with Christ for 1000 years while satan is in prison. The rest of the dead will remain unconscious just as the Bible says, the dust will return to the dust while the spirit will return to God who give it.

As proof, On a mountain Jesus was with 3 apostles,and Moses and Elias appeared from the realms of the Dead, and they were seen in conversation with Him..Moses representing All who died under the Law,and Elias representing All, who died under the prophets. There are many ways to look at this,the rich man was tested, the poor man was not.so does ds mean its better to be poor on Earth coz in life after death u will b comforted by Jesus.i mean Lazarus did not even ask for a job,so he believed that things just fall from trees, while the rich man worked 2 b rich or worked to sustain his richness, now de poor man was not even born again,he dd not even deserve 2b in heaven,like all of us,but by grace he was saved.so grace works for de poor only .de man was not a bad person he dd not understand,now his asking his brother s to b warn dts shows his not selfish as he is made 2be.de fact dt Lazarus dd nt say anything dt means Lazarus as would HV done de same on earth.after de heart of a rich man n a poor man will never b compared.pls correct me if I’m wrong,I DNT wnt2go2hell coz of not understanding

I lost my dad 27/09/2019 he was struck by a crane and some machine at work, I can’t stop but think if he is in pain or not, is he taken care of, how is he coping without us. I’m 29yrs old and I’m married but I feel like I still need my dad, no other man will ever play the role my father played not even my husband. I’m scared of being alone, because I feel my dad didn’t deserve to die such a painful death, yes he wasn’t perfect but the pain he went through was too much 😭. Yes death is gateway to afterlife beyond the grave. On Judgment Day all have to appear in exam. Who gets the result in their right hand will be passed while bad news for those who receive it by left hand.

Life really sucks for some of us. I’ve been contemplating and wanted to find out what really happens after you die? I’ve read all posts and feeling the pain from those who’ve faced this tragedy am even more heartbroken and hopeful that ill find a better solution. Thank you for sharing.
What is death? = separation of the body and the spirit. Body returns to the dust and spirit goes back to God who gave it to human. Spirit never stop living but body without spirit become liveless. Some verses that some people are quoting are not answering the question of what happen after death.
Yes indeed once you die your body becomes liveless. Once the spirit depart from the body, the body becomes liveless but the spirit live on and it travels back to God.

Maribel I am so sorry to hear about your son. To answer your question yes your son is not in heaven just yet but he is in a place called Paradise which is basically a waiting room until Jesus’s 2nd Coming then your son will be judged and sent to heaven where he will be with God and all the other blessed dead. Yes he can hear but he may not answer otherwise it will only cause more pain to you. And when you die you will see him again I promise you you can be sure of that. When we die we dont go to heaven or hell we are judged this judgement is called The Particular Judgement. This judgement will send us to either Paradise or Hades where we will await the 2nd Coming of Christ which afterwards will come the Final Judgement which will send to the 3rd Heaven to be with God or to the lake of fire and brimstone to be punished for our sins
This is what heppens after we die. When we die there are 2 kinds of judgment. The Particular Judgement and after Jesus’s 2nd Coming The Last and Final Judgement. What are those judments? The Particular Judgement will send us to either Hades or Paradise to awai for Jesus’s return . The Last And Final Judgment will happen only after Jesus’s Return and will send to either Heaven to be with God and the Saints for eternity or will send to the Lake of Fire and Brimstone to be away from God’s presence in torments for eternity
I lost my mom last December. I’m looking forward to see her again. This gives me hope that she will still recognize when I’m with her, hopefully. I believe in God. I just need to go on and continue on believing God.
I have lost many relatives and friends who lived for the Lord. I look forward to see them again. I had one friend who used to sing Gospel music with my mother and I in our group the Seven Seals Singers before my mother passed. I miss this friend very, very much because she was so faithful and sang so professionally!! Her names was Lillie. I will look to see her in the Heavenly Paradise.
I have barely lost every mature human beings at our home, Just left with children who cn not do anything for survival. For i am like the bread winner at home. Since the last loss of my Uncle i really knew i will be the next and what shall I do for the survival of my siblings

Firstly I would like to say thank you. For this platform its my first time to use the platform and I am so connected with the good news of our Living God.
I lost my husband 30th December 2019 it took his passing for me to learn he was having an affair for two years. He was my life partner for 25 years. Never have I ever felt so betrayed and humiliated. The betrayed is what’s hurts the deepest. I loved him dearly he was such a good person to me. Never for a momment did I suspect a thing. Living a God fearing life I prayed earnestly to God to help him with his salvation because of the loving kind hearted man he was. Today I’ve learnt salvation is a very personal matter. Today I see how God acted in my best interests protecting me because I was totally innocent in the matter. My heart bleeds for my late husband thinking of his lost opportunities he had in being apart of a God Fearing home with a God Fearing Wife. God knows the plans he has for us. My prayer is never to marry again I would love to live as a single women working out my salvation with fear and trembling until the end of my life. Sad to see how some men abuse their privileges take life for granted they choose the broad way not for a moment realizing it leads to death. God requires men and women who are courageous in serving him.

According to the Biblical account of Lazarus and the rich man, we will recognize one another after death. It is important to know that we will be comforted after death. We will know that everything is going to be all right. Then we will lose our sin nature, and our relationships with those we knew on earth will change. Imagine how nice it will be when our friends and family no longer have the sin nature and, more significant when we don’t have the sin nature.

This is pure Catholic teaching not biblical, that story is symbolic not literal. The dead no nothing. Ecclesiastes 9:5. And Job 7:10.
Remember in Genesis 3:4 the devil said to Eve you will not sure die up to now people think that you just transfer into another state of living but still alive.
The account of Lazarus and the rich man was told by Jesus, and it is in the Bible (Luke chapter 16). The Catholic church does well to teach it. It is possible that you are misinterpreting the scriptures in Ecclesiastes and Job. Consider that they are written from the world point of view. It is true that when we die, our brains go to ashes and cease to function, but spiritually we soar.

I lost the love of my life on the 04-11-2020. I feel so lost and empty without him I miss him so much and I wish to see him again. There’s so many people telling me I will see him again and some say I won’t I would like to know if I will get to see him again when I die. It gets harder everyday to wake up knowing you can’t see the person you love anymore life goes on but how can I go on without my right hand person and my love. I love him so much and I feel so terrible. Please tell me will I see him again in the after life?😭💔
I give my sincere sympathy to you at the death of your husband and to all the others who have lost loved ones. I cannot tell you whether you will see him again, but let me give you some information based on my experiences. When I lost my mother, it was like having a hole blown through my chest, heart, and stomach region. I could not function. After several weeks, I knew that I had to move on and lead my family; so I prayed to God and shared with Him my feelings. His answer surprised me. He told me to go ahead and mourn her; He told me that she deserved being mourned for and that I should feel good about in that I was doing what was right. I took His advice and it all worked out; the hole healed and I moved on. I suspect that losing a spouse is worse, but I suspect the principle is the same.
I would like to encourage all of those who are reading this to know that you, your mom, your dad, your siblings, and your spouse will die someday. Now is the time to deal with God on the issue of death. Death is certain and the biggest event in our lives other than birth. Seek God and His kingdom and everything will come together.

The dead no nothing and await judgement unconsciously, they no nothing, we all waiting for Christ second coming…I will give you an example…if you have a coffee bean and sugar and milk seperately, can you call it coffee??no you can’t , all this has to be put together to make coffee, same applies with us..the body and the breath of life were combined for us to be living , if we die , the body goes back to dust and the breath of life back to the creator, nothing lives on or a seperate spirit, those are false doctrines, the 2 need to combine to create a human, if one ain’t there then you don’t exist…so when you die it’s just like that deep sleep when you don’t dream just pure blackness, that’s how it is for the dead…
